People have questions. People have opinions. People have minds. God is not offended by questions. Since he created us in his image it should be no surprise that we all share the God-given capacity for reason. Some skeptics enjoy mischaracterizing Christians as people who have been coerced by a vengeful God to abandon reason.

We believers did not submit ourselves to a lobotomy when Jesus became our Savior. We have a living, vibrant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Like any relationship it involves communication. One thing that some skeptics have overlooked in their critique of believers is that attitude plays a role in how people come to terms with difficult theological concepts.

A great lesson in contrasting attitudes can be seen as we consider how Jesus responded to the woman at the well in the fourth chapter of the gospel of John and how Jesus responded to Herod in Luke 23:9. The woman’s conversation with Jesus was full of surprising twists and turns culminating with Jesus revealing the awesome truth that he was indeed the Messiah. We can read that Herod plied Jesus with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. The woman and a whole community received life (John 4:42), while Herod merely disappeared from history.
